A Small Scene

This gold room box is started out as another commercially produced room boxes, like the one I turned into a dairy. Mom made two of these room boxes a number of years ago. She sold one, and I kept the other.

All the wood in this box was aged using watered down acrylic paints. The plaster walls are just white paint, thickened with a little baby powder.
The stone floor and steps was made from tan polymer clay, since we couldn't find paper clay. The clay was textured with wadded up tin-foil.

I keep this room box above my workspace. I've never decided on a permanent display. For a long time, it just held a random assortment of miniatures that I didn't want to get dusty. That seems to be a common theme of my room boxes, unfortunately! Now that I've cleared it off all the junk, I'd like to add a few details to finish out the scene. It won't take many accessories, but finding just the right ones may be a challenge!
I'm on the fence about the gold frame. I don't hate the gold, but I think painting it black (the way I did with the dairy) may make the whole thing that much better. Would you paint the frame or leave it gold?

  1. I would paint.Gold frame schocks with rustic materials
    Bonne journée!

  2. Hello Eliza,
What a beautiful roombox. It is very unique! What about ageing or distressing the gold. It might reflect the interior room better.
    Big hug,

  3. I'd paint the frame, in my most humble opinion it jars with the Tudor era interior. Great door etc., very authentic looking.

    Michelle :o)

  4. I think I would paint the frame black too. It doesn't feel appropriate with the interior of the miniature setting.

I love the door and the hareware on it. I also like the effect of the powder-paint mix on the walls.

  5. Yes, I agree with the others, black would suit you scene much better.

  6. Perhaps you could just age it to make it conform more to the time period of the scene. You are so very talented. I'm just thrilled to have found you.

  7. Great work. I like the door and I'm curious to see more.
    Bye Faby

  8. I really like what you did inside. If it were me I would at least do a wash over the gold to tone it down, but that's just me. I'll keep an eye out to see what you decide I'm sure whatever you decide it will be great.

  9. What a great work!.
I love so much what you have done, that i'd paint the exterior frame white to emphasise the interior.
Later, if the finish were too much impersonal, i would age the frame.
